I started to develop a love for the arts in my formative years mainly due to my parents own love for the arts and all things creative. My mother went to art school in the 1950s and has been quite successful as a watercolor artist despite all the initial responsibilities of being a parent.
I took art as a subject at school and so was able to broaden my interests into other art forms. A few years after school I ran my own small home based pottery business. I made functional items but my main interest was on the decorative side of pottery.
In the late 1990s, I ventured into internet technologies and web oriented programming. I started my own web design business in 2001. It was an exciting time to see the potential of various emerging technologies.
One product worthy of note was Adobe Flash. Content was and still is king but the mass appeal of the internet needed rich media. As a web animation tool flash was once ahead of its time.
Due to the power of html5, flash is no longer a driving force in internet innovation. With HTML5 there is no longer any practical reason to create flash web site content.
Millions of mobile devices do not support flash web site content and will never support it in the future. Adobe has already announced no further mobile support for flash. But due to the ubiquitous nature of flash it will still take some time for it to disappear from web pages entirely.
HTML5 is already playing a key role and will dominate in the years ahead. Touch screen technologies with audio, video and other web oriented technologies make the internet a very interesting place.
All these cool innovations have and still pose numerous challenges to designers and developers. Many products don’t or are unable to support particular technologies. This is where a more flexible approach to design is absolutely essential. Once cannot only design for traditional computers.
The touch screen slate and the smart phone are just as important as web browsing devices as the traditional computer. Statistics indicate that there will be more mobile devices browsing the internet by the end of 2013 than general pcs.
It’s therefore very important to ensure that design decisions comply with the broadest number of web browsers and widely accepted web specifications.
